Williamstown, MA—Williams College senior
Charlotte VanWagenen scored on a break away 7 minutes into
overtime, lifting the Ephs to a 3-2 win over conference rival
Colby, Sunday at Renzie Lamb Field.
Play was fast paced in the first half as both teams battled for
possession. With 2:15 into the game Jess Overlander scored from a
penalty corner (assisted by Vanwagenen) to put the Ephs up, 1-0.
Colby answered with 25:49 left in the first half when Chelsea
Rosenheimer crossed the ball to Amy Campbell who scored in a
scramble in front of the goal. Williams then converted their 2nd
penalty corner of the game when Cary Bearn scored (assisted by
Meighan McGowan) with 4:27 left in the first half.
Williams held their 2-1 lead during most of the 2nd half, until
Colby's Mary Clare Snediker was awarded a penalty stroke with 6:09
left in regulation play. She scored, hitting the top right corner
of the goal, over Bethany Baker's left shoulder.
Overtime saw fast break after fast break as each team took turns
driving the ball down the field. Williams had the last break
however, as VanWagenen scored on the break away, stick handling
past Jamie Enos' left side and putting the ball in for the
game-winner.
Head coach Alix Rorke, was proud of her teams' ability to play
hard against a talented Colby squad, "we really had to dig deep
with two back to back games this weekend….we played very
well against a great team, Colby's defense did a really nice job
countering our offense", said Coach Rorke.
Williams defenseman, Amy Siedlecki made some spectacular plays in
the backfield late in the game, "Amy was a life saver in overtime",
said Coach Rorke. Charolette VanWagenen had an amazing weekend.
While battling injury and moving up to forward from midfield, she
racked up 4 points this weekend, assisting the game winner against
Bates on Saturday, and scoring the game winning goal in today's
overtime match.
The Eph's are looking forward to their upcoming contest at
Middlebury on 10/13, "it will be an extremely tough game", said
Coach Rorke.
