WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. - Williams (3-0-0) dealt Springfield (4-1-0) their first loss of the season in an overpowering shutout at Cole Field this afternoon.  The 4-0 win was a collective effort, as Ephs head coach Michelyne Pinard constantly changed the look of her squad with twenty substitutions throughout the game.

Pinard said, "Our depth is a strength and we use it as much as we can.  Our freshman and sophomores provide a lot of speed and tenacity.  This helps our upperclassmen accomplish what they want to accomplish which is to compete at the highest level they possibly can."

The Ephs held possession of the ball for the majority of the game, allowing the team to control the pace of the match up and establish the game they wanted to play.  Brianna Woolfson scored her second goal of the season, finding the net nearly eight minutes into the contest.  Gabrielle Woodson tallied her third goal only five minutes after Woolfson's shot to put the Ephs up 2-0 at the 13:15 mark.

Williams continued their first half offensive surge after a perfect cross from the right side by Hannah Ratcliffe.  Clare Gallagher, sprinting towards the far post, timed her arrival with the ball perfectly and headed it into the back corner past a diving goalkeeper.   The Ephs' fourth and final goal came off the foot of Sarah Walmsley after Charlotte Silverman dribbled in on the far left side to go alone on goal.  The Springfield goalie came out of the box, and Silverman found Walmsley storming down the field towards the center of the goal.  Walmsley then tapped the ball into the empty net.

Because the Williams women's traditional playing field is undergoing work, the game was held on a larger field.  Pinard believed this was to the Ephs' advantage commenting that "the width of the field gave us a lot of space for passing and creating opportunities."

The Ephs have opened the season strong, winning three straight and allowing only one goal in the three contests.  Pinard hopes these early wins will help build the confidence of the team and solidify their play before the bulk of the conference schedule begins.

Williams hosts conference opponent Connecticut College at 12:00 pm this Saturday on Cole Field.
