WILLIAMSTOWN, MA-  The Williams College volleyball team (14-7) remained undefeated at home and extended their season-best seven match winning streak Wednesday night with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-22) victory over visiting SUNY-New Paltz.  In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Ephs donned pink shirts, shorts, wristbands and shoelaces as well as pink volleyballs and whistles, all in an effort to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

"We had a modified lineup today and everyone on this team stepped up to the challenge,"  said head coach Fran Vandermeer.  "Chelsea [Kubal] stepped in [for injured setter Emily Avis] and looked like she had been playing the position her whole life."

It was junior Chelsea Kubal who led an Eph offense that was able to rebound from a big deficit early in the first set.  Down by as many as eight points in the match's opening frame, the Ephs were able to pull within 19-17 and grab the momentum back from a New Paltz team that had come in to Chandler with a 17-1 record.

The Ephs never looked back and jumped out to big leads in the second and third set, and came out with the victory in the match's well-fought final set.

Sophomore Eleanor Levine continued to post impressive numbers and performances, as she tallied 14 digs, 15 kills, and two aces.  Kubal, in her 2008 setter debut, posted 49 assists to go along with 12 digs and four aces.

After the first set, the Ephs were also able frustrate the New Paltz offense with a defense that refused to let the ball touch the ground.  Whether it was first year Aly McKinnon (15 digs, 3 kills) saving a ball while diving into the scorer's table or junior Andrea Scioscia (17 digs, 3 aces) digging every ball hit her way, the Ephs forced the New Paltz offense out of system and into frustration all night.

Rounding out the numbers for the Ephs were juniors Kate Anderson (16 kills, 4 digs), Nicole Ballon-Landa (12 kills) and Whitney Hitchcock (5 kills, 2 aces).

The Ephs now look forward to four matches at the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis, Mo, which kicks off Friday afternoon with a match against Illinois Wesleyan at 3 PM.
