AMHERST, Mass - The Williams College men's lacrosse team suffered a decisive 17-8 defeat to NESCAC and Little Three archrival Amherst Saturday at Gooding Field in a crucial conference matchup. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Ephs (4-5, 2-5 NESCAC) and forces them to settle for a three-way split of the 2008 Little Three title.

Amherst (7-5, and 2-4 NESCAC) set the tone early -scoring the game's first four goals, and the Ephs could never make it close again. The Lord Jeff's were led by T.J. Jackson and Will Ferrer, who tallied five and four goals respectively, and Brett Miller's six assists; while Dixon Hargrove, Michael Vrla, and David Hawley each recorded a pair of goals for the Ephs in the losing effort.

John-Thomas Milone scored the first two goals of the contest as the Lord Jeff's jumped out to a four goal lead in only the games first seven minutes. The Ephs were able to get on the board with only 18 seconds remaining in the period, off of Hargrove's first score, to make it 4-1 after one.

Michael Vrla converted an Andy Camposeo pass to pull the Ephs within two only 30 seconds into the second period, but that proved to be the closest they would come as the Lord Jeffs peeled off the three next goals and four of the next five to close out the first half leading 8-3.

In the third quarter, the two rivals traded scores for the first six goals of the frame but Amherst would expand their lead by two before the period was through, leaving the Ephs with a mountainous 13-6 deficit.

The Lord Jeffs outscored the Ephs 4-2 in the final stanza to balloon the final score to 17-8.

Amherst had an edge in nearly every statistical category including shots (Williams 38, Amherst 42), ground balls (Williams 22, Amherst 38), and saves (Amherst 18, Williams 11), but the Ephs were able to earn a stalemate in faceoff wins with 27 apiece.

The Ephs look to rebound this Thursday when Keene State travels to Williamstown. The game is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
