HARTFORD, CT. – Facing its first
conference contest away from their home courts, men's tennis
fell to a tough Trinity Bantams squad, 6-3. A
traditionally strong Ephs singles lineup could not pull Williams
out of a 2-1 hole following doubles play, leading to their first
NESCAC loss of the season.
Dan Greenberg and Bret Thacher tallied the
first doubles victory, while Gary Simonette and Nick Lebedoff fell
at the number two spot. Jeremy Weinberger and
Rick Devlin found themselves in a nail biter at court three, taking
their opponents to a tiebreak.
With a win, the Ephs would gain some much
needed momentum heading into singles play,
but the Williams pair couldn't find a
rhythm in the breaker, and fell 9-8(7-2).
In singles play, Devlin and Weinberger
redeemed their doubles loss by tallying the only two singles
victories for the Ephs. Devlin succumbed in the
second set, but powered ahead to take the final set for the
win. Weinberger was involved in a close match of
his own, but held strong to take the match in a second set
tiebreak.
“I give
a lot of credit to Trinity,” said Williams head coach Dave
Donn. “They
played very well on their home courts. They
deserve the match, and outplayed
us.”
Williams will look to return to their winning
ways this weekend in an important weekend of conference
play. The Ephs first take on Bowdoin in Maine
this Saturday.
“We have no choice but to
rebound,” continued Donn. “We are a
mentally tough team, and we're confident that we can bounce
back from this weekend. This is a bump in the road, and
a frustrating loss.”
