WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass - The Williams College men's lacrosse team
(6-5, 3-5) built a 10-1 halftime lead before cruising to a 14-6
victory over NESCAC foe Trinity (5-7, 3-5) Saturday. The win marks
the Ephs second consecutive victory and leaves them poised for next
Saturdays regular season finale at Bowdoin - a game the Ephs must
win to secure a spot in the NESCAC playoffs.
Tim White contributed a pair of goals and assists and Richard
Reuter tallied two scores, but David Hawley once again led the Eph
attack with four goals - pushing his team leading season goal total
to 31. And for the second straight game the Ephs early offensive
burst was triggered by the stellar faceoff work of Corey Jacobs.
The defense was guided by the twin efforts of Brian Morrissey
and Ryan Powell as goalie Michael Gerbush (14 saves) continued to
hold it all together with another big game.
After trading goals in the games first 3:03, it was all Williams
for the remainder of the first half as the Ephs ripped off nine
unanswered goals before the intermission. The highlight of the
bunch came with just 6:16 left in the half, when during a Bantam
extra man opportunity, the Ephs forced a quick turnover sparking a
transition that culminated in Morrissey taking a Powell pass and
punching it in for a rare short-handed goal.
The Ephs would extend their advantage to 11-1 only 2:36 into the
third quarter, but the Bantam's responded just forty seconds later
when Kris Tedeschi put a point blank shot into the net. The goal
proved to be a catalyst for the Bantam's as they went on to record
the games next four goals, bringing them to within striking
distance at 11-6 just 2:33 into the fourth quarter.
However, after an apparent goal by Powell was nullified, the
junior led a rapid counter marked by his determined runs and
clears. Powell ultimately broke through the Bantam defense after
spinning away from one defender at the midline, accelerating past
two more, and then firing one in from ten yards, to make it
12-6 with 10:38 remaining.
Hawley and White would add a goal apiece before regulation,
making the final score a decisive 14-6 victory.
For the second consecutive game the Eph victory was reflected in
not just the score but the stats, as the Ephs dominated shots
(Williams 46, Trinity 26), ground balls (Williams 42, Trinity 28),
and faceoff wins (Williams 14, Trinity 10).
"It was a complete team effort - from Jacobs faceoff work, to
Gerbush in Goal, to Morrissey on Defense, everyone played well
together." Remarked Eph coach George McCormak. "We are getting hot
at the right time and are playing our best lacrosse of the year,
but we got to keep making strides."
The Ephs will look to stay hot and earn a berth in the NESCAC
playoffs. They host Bowdoin in their regular season finale next
Saturday at 12:00 PM.
