MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Williams College men's lacrosse team twice
battled back from a three-goal-deficit only to fall 7-6 to
undefeated Middlebury team at Kohn Field Wednesday.
Michael Virla brought the Ephs within one with 1:02 remaining,
but it was too little too late as Panther goalie Pete Britt
recorded three of his nine saves in the waning moments to preserve
the win. David Hawley recorded two goals to increase his team
leading goal tally to 16 in the Ephs losing effort.
Williams (2-4, 1-4) took the early lead with a man-up goal from
Hawley at the 9:58 mark of the first quarter. However, Middlebury
(7-0, 5-0) evened it up only eight seconds later before ultimately
building a 3-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Ephs responded with a pair of goals from Richard Reuter and
Ryan Powell to tie the game at the 6:42 mark of the second period.,
but the experienced Panthers restored the advantage before the
period was through and went into half leading 5-3.
The Ephs and Panthers would trade goals in the third, before
Corey Jacobs cut the lead to 6-5 with 14:53 remaining in the final
period. But Middlebury would responds again, this time when Matt
Ferrer took a Pete Smith pass and punched it through the legs of
Eph Goalie Michael Gerbush (11 saves). Virla's late goal would once
again bring the Ephs to within one, but the Panthers held tough and
recorded the win.
The Middlebury victory avenges last season's dramatic loss to
Williams in Williamstown - a loss which snapped a 14 game
win-streak for the Panthers. The Panthers held a slight edge in
shots (Middlebury 29, Williams 23) but the two teams each recorded
17 face off victories.
The Ephs look to rebound against Wesleyan this Saturday, April
5th. The game is set for 1:00 PM in Williamstown.
