LEWISTON, ME. – Tested on all fronts,
men's tennis wrapped up a weekend of challenging NESCAC
competition with two hard-fought and well-earned wins in their
pocket. Following
Saturday's victory over Bowdoin, Williams defeated Bates by a
6-3 advantage this afternoon to up their conference record to 7-1
and their overall record to 15-2.
“Today's match showed how deep
this league is, ” said Ephs head coach Dave Donn.
“There's never an easy match and it was certainly
proved today. We
[Williams] played well when we had to, and stepped up in big
points. It's
something we're going to have do moving forward for the rest
of the season.”
After taking a 2-1 lead into singles play,
Williams needed to play a strong singles game to defeat the pesky
Bobcats. While Karol
Furmaga and Rick Devlin continue to dominate in the five and six
slots, Gary Simonette and Jeremy Weinberger struggled at courts
three and four. They
fell in straight sets by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2 scores respectively.
Both Dan Greenberg and Nick Lebedoff played
lengthy matches at courts one and two. Greenberg prevailed after losing
in a first set tiebreak, 6-7(4), 7-5, (10-3).
Lebedoff also fell in the first set of his match, but came back
with intensity to put away the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 and clinch the
win for the Ephs.
“I was very proud of the way Nick
Lebedoff played today,” continued Donn. “He didn't play his
best tennis at times but just found a way to win and came up with a
huge win for us.”
The Ephs will compete in their final regular
season contest this Wednesday versus Tufts at 4:00 p.m at
home.
