WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – Women's soccer (4-0-0, 2-0-0) rattled
off three goals in an eventful final five minutes of play to put
away the visiting Bowdoin Polar Bears (1-1-2, 0-1-1) in a 4-0
victory.
The Bears kept the Ephs to a 1-0 lead for nearly forty-five
minutes before Sara Wild and Annelise Snyder teamed up for a
combined three goals and two assists. Although Williams out
shot Bowdoin by a 22-5 margin and had countless opportunities to
score, the home team couldn't convert until late into the
contest.
First-year Sachi Siegelman chose an opportune time to score her
first collegiate goal. When it looked as though Williams
would be shut out in the first half for the first time this season,
Siegelman broke the offensive drought at the 40:51 mark.
Snyder fed a ball to Siegelman from outside the goal box, and
Siegelman collected the ball and nailed a hard liner past a diving
goalkeeper for the score.
Bowdon keeper Rachel Schwember had an impressive outing in the
second half; notching five critical saves when the Ephs posed a
great threat to score. On the other hand, Williams couldn't
seem to get their foot on the ball correctly and missed many
wide-open looks at goal.
"Bowdoin is a very organized team," commented Williams' head coach
Michelyne Pinard. "They have an organized back four, and a
great midfield. They are very good at cutting off options in
the middle, and they are a great team and it was a great game."
The Williams offense finally got in gear at the eighty-five minute
mark.
"We had opportunities to score all game long," continued Pinard.
"We just finished those opportunities late in the game, and that
made the big difference."
With 4:37 on the clock, Gabrielle Woodson charged in on goal, but
was defended well outside the penalty box. Woodson chose
smartly to cut the ball back, and pass to an open Wild waiting to
her right. Wild received the pass, and laced a beauty that
landed just below the middle of the crossbar and completely out of
reach of a leaping Schwember.
The Ephs were not content to pad their lead with just one
insurance goal, and continued to attack. With under a minute
to play, Williams put two more tallies on the scoreboard.
Annelise Snyder ripped a shot that just curved into the top left
corner of the net for her first score of the season. Snyder
finished the day with one goal and two assists. Wild assisted
on the play, and scored once more with 12 seconds left on the clock
to complete a busy day on the field with two goals and one
assist.
Fifth-ranked Williams will travel to play #17 Western Connecticut
State on Tuesday for a 7:00 night match up. After losing to
Hamilton in the Sweet 16 last season, the Ephs had to watch Western
Connecticut advance to the Final Four on their home turf in
sectionals.
"This is an exciting game for us," said Pinard. "Mid-week games
are always tough, and it is against a great opponent. There
is extra incentive for us after what happened last year."
