MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Women's
basketball (5-9) dropped their third straight contest, and ninth of
the season, against Little Three foe Wesleyan (7-4) tonight,
86-45. The 41-point
margin was the largest of any game between the two schools since
1940.
“They couldn't miss, and we
couldn't hit anything,” said Williams head coach Pat
Manning. “It
was just another frustrating loss.”
The two teams combined for seven points in the
opening three and a half minutes, before Wesleyan powered past the
Ephs with a 20-point run to take a commanding 24-3 lead at the
halfway point of the first frame. Williams was
able to notch a few points before the Cardinals mounted another
incredible scoring frenzy. The 27-9 run brought
the halftime score to 57-18.
Wesleyan shot a staggering 55.6% from the
floor in the first half, and 50% for the game.
Although the Ephs were able to keep pace with the opposition in the
second half, their horrific start was too much to overcome.
“It was the worst start ever,”
continued Manning.
“If there was anything good to say about the game, we became
more competitive in the second half and followed
up.”
Mika Peterman and Chessie Jackson led the Ephs
with 15 points and 13 points respectively.
Ali Fourney scored a game-high 21 points,
while Meredith Lowe tallied 14 points and Lucy Sprung notched
eight.
The Ephs will continue a tough stretch away
from home, traveling to play Tufts on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
