LEWISTON, ME. – Women's basketball
dropped their fifth straight contest and second game in as many
days in a tough stretch on the road. Following a
blowout victory by Wesleyan against the Ephs on Friday night,
Williams (5-11, 0-2) dug themselves another deep hole in the first
half against Bates (13-4, 2-0) in today's
contest.
Once again, a more solid second period could
not erase the shoddy play of the earlier frame, and the Ephs lost
their second NESCAC game, 90-67.
The Bobcats held an advantage on all fronts,
shooting 48.6% from the floor versus the Ephs' 37.3 shooting
percentage. Bates
outrebounded the Ephs 44-36, and shot an outstanding 86.7% from the
charity stripe with a 13-of-15 effort. It was a
complete role reversal from the two team's last showdown,
where Williams put together their most complete forty minutes of
the season with a 84-63 victory over Bates on January
4th.
Playing from behind 15-11, the Ephs allowed
Bates to go on a 22-5 run. The Bobcats would
close out the half with another 8-0 streak to take a commanding
50-22 advantage at the half. Williams was kept to 21.2% from
the floor with just 7 field goals.
“We played great in the second half, but
we dug ourselves a hole down 50-22,” said Williams head coach
Pat Manning. “A
positive of the second half was that our bench play was strong and
spirited.”
The Ephs drastically improved in the second
half, shooting 52.9% on 18-34 field goal attempts, but Bates
continued to match baskets leading by as many as 30 at 82-52 with
4:36 to play.
Jess Harris had a standout weekend, finishing
tonight's contest with 18 points and 7
rebounds. Mika Peterman and Taylor Shea chipped
in 13 points apiece.
Lauren Yanofsky tallied a game-high 20 points
and 7 rebounds for the Bobcats. Val Beckwith
added 16, and Jessie Igoe contributed 12 points.
Williams will return home next weekend to host
Wesleyan and Connecticut College. Game time
versus the Cardinals on Friday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
