AMHERST, MA. – Last
season, a 1-1 tie with Amherst was the only blemish on an otherwise
perfect regular season of soccer. This year,
third-ranked Williams (8-0, 4-0 in the NESCAC) traveled to
fourteenth-ranked Amherst (5-2, 3-1), handing the Lord Jeffs a 3-0
loss to give the Ephs a one-up in the all-time series at 14-13-8
and to preserve their undefeated record.
The win gives Williams the Little Three title,
as the Ephs defeated Wesleyan in their season opener on September
12, 5-0.
The Amherst defense managed to keep Williams
to their lowest shot total of the season at 19, but the Ephs
converted when it mattered to tally the win.
Williams scored at 30:22 to establish a 1-0 first-half lead after
Annie Neil fed Annelise Snyder a long ball from the center of the
field. Snyder brought her scoring total on the season to
eight, scoring the first and third goals of today's
contest.
Williams and Amherst both took six shots in
the first frame, statistically on par for the first forty-five
minutes of play. The Lord Jeffs had a great
look at goal in the first half, off a shot that grazed Ephs' keeper
Lauren Sinnenberg's hands and nicked the post. Fortunately
for Williams the shot narrowly missed and the Lord Jeffs couldn't
muster another opportunity to score.
As a result, the Ephs came out in the second
half hungry to expand their margin. Tyler Rainer
scored her first goal of the season just five minutes into the
second half, nailing one off the post at the 50:09.
Snyder added the third goal under the five
minute mark at 86:49 to seal the deal for the
Ephs.
Williams will return home next weekend to host
Bates and Trinity.
