N.Y. – The Ephs (7-1) were kept scoreless for the
first three minutes of play, but quickly broke their scoring
drought to tear ahead of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1-5) for
their seventh consecutive victory, 78-59.
Williams used eleven successful shots from downtown to deal the
Engineers their third straight loss.
Kelsey Ham knocked down a jumper from behind
the arc to start the night of for the Ephs. In
the next seven minutes, the Ephs were able to build a twenty-point
plus lead. Williams maintained their quality of
play until the break, leading 46-21 in the first half.
“I thought it was a very solid game,
especially in the first,” said Williams' head coach Pat
Manning. “It
was a solid performance, and our defense was solid the whole game
through and we have really been trying to keep that up for two
halves. It has been
our goal for the past couple games and we really feel like
we're making progress defensively.”
Williams led by as many as twenty-seven points
with 12:05 on the clock after Grace Rehnquist nailed a three-point
shot, and did not let up in the final twenty minutes of play to
seal the win. The
Ephs kept RPI to just 32.3% shooting from the floor, while the Ephs
knocked down nearly half of their attempts on the court.
Whitney Coleman led RPI with 17 points,
shooting 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Allison
Connor chipped in 11 points, while Hillary McKinley and Nicole
Monroe added 8 points each.
The Ephs received three big performances from
their freshman.
Jennie Harding led the Ephs offensive charge with 16 points, while
Grace Rehnquist followed with 14 points. Harding
and Rehnquist knocked down four three-pointers each.
First-year Danny Rainer also added 10 points. Junior Chessie
Jackson contributed 13 points, while sophomore Lisa Jaris scored 9
points.
“Jennie Harding had a big night,”
continued Manning.
“She really pushed the pace for us.
Chessie hit some key shots for us, and Grace came in and went on a
tear.”
Williams will host Western Connecticut State
University this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Chandler
Gymnasium.
