LEWISTON, ME. - Williams women's basketball (8-13, 3-3) nearly
pulled off a brilliant come from behind victory against conference
opponent Colby (10-9, 2-4). Trailing by fifteen with just
three minutes on the clock, the Ephs knotted the game in the final
seconds before falling to the Mules, 74-72.
Mika Peterman entered today's contest needing 10 points to reach
the 1000 point mark, and notched 14 points to become the
12th woman in program history to accomplish such a feat.
Colby pulled out to an 8-0 lead in first 3:27 before a lay up by
Jill Greenberg put the Ephs on the scoreboard. The Mules led
by as many as 14 points in the first half, ahead 24-10 with
9:22 to play. A Greenberg jumper closed it the gap to 24-18 at
7:06, before allowing the Mules to rebuild another more substantial
advantage. Williams closed to within six once again with one
minute remaining, before a layup by Julianne Kowalski bumped the
lead to 8 with 34 seconds left in the half.
The Mules expanded their lead quickly with two three-pointers to
open the second half. The first ten minutes of the period saw
similar basketball to the first half, with Colby controlling the
game. The home team led by as many as 15 points, at the 11:15
mark, 60-45. They seemed on pace for a victory, leading by
eleven points with just three and a half minutes to play.
The Ephs mounted an 11-2 run in the following three minutes,
tying the game at 72 points apiece following a Peterman shot from
behind the arc. On the ensuing possession, Colby's Aarika
Ritchie nailed a mid-range jumper in the lane to lead 74-72.
Teammate Sam Allen blocked a Williams shot with 1.2 seconds left
that went out of bounds underneath the basket. The Ephs
called a timeout to outline their final play, and had a solid
chance to tie the game as time expired, but failed to convert down
on the block with a hurried lay up.
"We got outhustled in the first half," said Ephs head coach Pat
Manning. "We came out in the second half and shot well, we
had a chance to get a second shot off in the final seconds and it
came in and out. It was a great second half effort but not enough
effort in the first half."
Alison Cappelloni led all scorers with 20 points, and added 11
rebounds for a double-double. Allen added 14 points,
while the hero of the night, Ritchie, contributed 11.
Peterman and Greenberg scored 14 points apiece, while Jess
Harris added another double-double to her resume with 11 points and
12 rebounds. Taylor Shea added 13 points.
The Ephs will look to bounce back against Bowdoin
tomorrow. Game time is set for 2:00.
