WILLIAMSTOWN,
MA. – Seventh-ranked Williams men's tennis (9-3,
4-1) finished off a great three days of tennis, winning three
matches in as many days by defeating #24 Bates (8-4, 3-4) this
afternoon at home, 7-2. The Ephs have just one day free
of match play before the host Trinity in their final regular season
home match on Wednesday.
"This was a very challenging win for us and
keeps the momentum going in the right direction,” said
Williams' head coach Dave Donn. “Bates is well coached and
plays tough so we are happy with the result and continue to look
for ways to improve.”
The top two Ephs pairs were challenged in
doubles play. While
Bret Thacher and Dicken Chaplin came up on the short end of a 9-7
match at court one, Nick Lebedoff and Will Petrie prevailed over
their Bates opponents in a tiebreak. Jeremy Weinberger and Kevin
Shallcross were not as challenged as their Eph teammates, and were
dominant in an 8-0 victory at court three.
The Ephs took care of business in singles
play. Lebedoff and
Weinberger recorded victories with identical 6-3, 6-1 scores. Shallcross played the only
three setter of the match, but prevailed in a tight third set for
the win. At court
five, Karol Furmaga breezed through his match in a 6-1, 6-1 win,
while Thacher pulled through in a second set tiebreak for the
straight set win.
Rick Devlin suffered the only loss in singles at court three.
