WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass -- Williams College forward
Charles Romero scored twice in a five minute span in the first half
and again six minutes into the second to lead the Ephs past
visiting conference foe Connecticut College 4-0 Saturday. The win
moves the Ephs to 2-0-1 and gives them their first conference
victory of the season, while the Camels fall to 1-1.
Romero's hat-trick is made all the more impressive by the
fact that it represents the first time the junior forward has found
the net in his three year collegiate career.
“Romero has been pressing for years.” remarked Eph
coach Mike Russo, “We knew that it eventually would happen
for him, and I am delighted that it came in such a dramatic
fashion.”
However it wasn't all Romero, but a complete team effort
that delivered the lop-sided victory.
“We played a complete unselfish game and were able to move
the ball from the back line to the front really efficiently. It was
a total team victory.”
The Ephs produced 14 shots to the Camels six, despite being called
for 19 fouls to the visitor's 9 in the win.
Pierre Meloty-Kapella rounded out the scoring for Williams and
Gaston Kelly notched two assists to pace the offense. Andrew Graham
made his debut in the net for the Ephs and tallied three saves
before being replaced late when the outcome was decided.
Williams got on the board in the 14th minute off of an excellent
through ball from Kelly that split the defense and caught Romero
in-stride at the top of box before Romero bested the keeper
one-on-one with a low skipping winner.
Williams struck again in similar fashion just five minutes later
when Romero once more found himself on the receiving end of a
nicely placed through ball, this time from Nick Pugliese, and
caught Camel Keeper Alex Martland (5 saves) flat footed before
pushing it in for the score.
Connecticut College was able to mount some pressure late in the
half, but the Eph defense held the line and sent the game into the
intermission with the Ephs up 2-0.
It didn't take long for Romero to find the net again in the
second half. Using another nice ball from Kelly, Romero was able to
find space and slip it past Martland to balloon the lead to 3-0
with 39 minutes to play.
The Ephs would continue to keep play in the visitors end and
ultimately produced a final score when Pierre Meloty-Kapella ran
down a errant ball in front of the Camel keeper and, turning on a
heel, knocked it home to settle the score at 4-0.
However, the Ephs wont have long to savor the victory as they
travel to Wheaton tomorrow, September 19th, for a
non-conference matchup. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM kick
off.
