Postmatch
Williamstown, MA---The Ephs (12-6) faced off
against the SUNY-New Paltz Hawks (18-6, 4-0 SUNYAC) at home and
triumphed in a well-fought 3-2 match(25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 28-30,
15-12).
Coach Joel Williams put it frankly and articulately: "it was a
gutcheck for the team..."
The Ephs finished the match with 117 digs on the evening led by
a joint effort between junior Aly McKinnon and
freshman Emily Baratta who
each had 27 digs. Seniors Emily Avis and Kate
Anderson had 22 digs each. Tonight was a special night for Kate
Anderson, who surpassed the 400 dig career mark with 418 career
digs to date showing her growth as a defensive player. The Ephs
tallied 10 blocks for the evening — led by a consistently
powerful effort from senior Eleanor Levine(3
blocks). Kate Anderson had 19 kills tonight, and ended the fifth
match tonight with a ferocious swing. Emily Baratta had 14 kills
and was closely followed by Eleanor Levine's 12 kills.
New Paltz entered tonight's match winning 13 of their last 14
games and definitely showed a passionate display of competition.
Coach Kelsey was proud of the Ephs tonight against what she called
"one of the strongest teams in the New York region". She also noted
that "we maintained our poise when things got tough". And things
did indeed get tough during the fourth and fifth sets through a
series of time outs being called back and forth between the two
squads. New Paltz's Melinda DiGiovanna gave the Ephs a share of
work to handle tonight with her impressive hitting.
The Ephs will be kicking off home tournament play with a match
Friday night against Colby at 6 PM. The match will be available via
live webcast.
