Ephs drop second league game to Bates 2-1

For the second league game in a row, women's soccer left the field feeling frustrated and defeated.  After 90 minutes of play, the Ephs had taken 30 shots to Bates's nine.  It was the Bobcats, though, who added to their victory column with a 2-1 win.

It did not take Bates long to get on the board in today's contest.  Just ten minutes into the game, senior Meredith Poore took control as she shot the ball from 35 yards out.  The ball found its way over Julia Schreiber's head and into the far corner of the net to give the Bobcats the early 1-0 lead.  Staying aggressive though, the Ephs quickly answered.  Just over ten minutes later, Brett Eisenhart scored on a low shot from ten yards out.  It was her seventh goal of the year.  Going into halftime, Williams had outshot Bates 11 to 7.
Coming out of the break, the Ephs dominated on both the offensive and defensive ends.  Williams had 19 shots in the second half including five on goal which were turned away by freshman goalie Annabel Schmelz, who made only the second appearance of her college career after Bates starting keeper Annie Burns left the game with an injury just over five minutes into the half.  Bates, on the other hand, record only two shots in the half.   It looked like the game might end in a draw until with only 7:47 to play, Tina Tobin crossed the ball from near the right sideline to Alix Vandeventer.   Vandeventer volleyed the ball into the net for her third game-winning goal of the year. Eisenhart looked like she might tie it up for the Ephs when she fired the ball at the net with just under four minutes to play. The shot hit the crossbar.  Along with Eisenhart, Sara Wild was also very aggressive on the offensive end today, recording 11 shots in the game.  The Ephs were unable to find a last second miracle, though, as they moved to 2-2-1 in the NESCAC and 6-3-1 overall.  Bates has a 4-4-1 overall record and is 2-3-1 in the league.

After the game, Coach Michelyne Pinard said, "It was a tough [loss].  We are all pretty disappointed but realize that this is soccer.  You can dominate a game and not win.  We just need to keep moving forward and keep getting better each day.  That's our goal."  The Ephs look to rebound Tuesday with a noon game at Trinity.
