BEVERLY, MA – For the Williams
men's lacrosse team it will be good to get home.
Playing their fifth straight road contest the Williams (3-3) lost
to Endicott College (4-4) 14-9. The loss was the third in a
row for the Ephs.
Endicott opened the contest with a 5-goal flurry before the Ephs
were able to get on the scoreboard with 3:36 to go in the first
quarter. The Gulls took a 6-2 lead at the end of the first 15
minutes.
“It's tough to start out down 5-0, but I thought we
did well to get back within two goals late,” said Eph head
coach George McCormack. “In the end it was a case of too many
turnovers and too many penalties and the turnovers and penalties
seemed to happen at critical times. But give Endicott credit,
they out played us.”
The Ephs tightened up their defense in the second quarter
holding Endicott to just one goal, while getting a goal each from
Richie Reuter and Tommy Murray, making the score 7-4 in favor of
Endicott at the half.
Endicott then proceeded to out score the Ephs in the third
quarter 4-3 to boost their lead to four goals, 11-7, entering the
final frame. The Ephs netted the first two goals of the quarter
when Matt Cranshaw scored unassisted at 14:11 and then Cranshaw set
up Mike Ryan for a tally at 12:05 drawing the Ephs within two,
11-9.
“I think we have some good offensive players, but we need
to not hurt ourselves with turnovers,” McCormack noted.
Endicott responded to the Eph threat with three unanswered
goals, making the final margin 14-9.
Endicott out shot the Ephs 37-27, though the Ephs (21) had one
more shot on goal than the Gulls. Endicott's Eric Hagarty
turned aside 21 Eph attempts in collecting the win, while the Ephs
Stephen Vrla stopped six Gull shots.
The two bright lights statistically for the Ephs were being
successful on four of six man-up opportunities and winning 18 of 27
faceoffs. Endicott collected one more ground ball than did the
Ephs, 41-40, and the Gulls posted 25 successful clears to the Ephs
20. The contest featured 13 penalties with seven being called
against Williams. The Ephs also committed one more turnover than
Endicott, 24-23.
The Ephs were led in scoring by Richie Reuter, Tommy Murray and
Tim Goggins each of whom netted two goals, while Mike Ryan and Matt
Cranshaw each had one goal and two assists. Endicott was led in
goal scoring by Brad Lipkvich who tallied three goals and overall
by Jack Curtis who netted one goal and assisted on five more.
“Today was our poorest performance of the season, so it
will be good to get home and get off the road,” stated
McCormack. “We'll get right back to work tomorrow and
try to rebound against Trinity on Saturday.”
The Ephs 3-3/2-1 NESCAC will be looking to snap the three-game
skid, start a winning steak, and remain in second place in NESCAC
Saturday when they host conference foe Trinity at 1:00 PM on Lamb
Field. Trinity is 5-2/1-2 NESCAC on the year with a game at Lasell
College on Wednesday afternoon before arriving in Williamstown.
