WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – Williams men's
tennis garnered themselves a winning record this afternoon against
Tufts University with a 9-0 sweep in their first conference match
up of the season. The Ephs move to 4-3 on the season, and have won
four straight matches since dropping their first three
contests. Tufts drops to 5-6 overall, and 2-3 in the NESCAC.
“I feel good about today's win,” said Williams
head tennis coach Dan Greenberg. “Tufts is always
tricky to play, as they have a crafty style of play. Our
doubles is coming together, and it was good that we kept focus
after going 3-0 and did not let up at all in singles, which was
important. I feel good that we didn't look ahead to
Amherst, and still took care of business today.”
The Ephs swept doubles play for only the second time this
season. Nick Lebedoff and Dicken Chaplin played solid tennis
at court one, defeating their opponents 8-4. Bryan Chow and
Will Petrie closed out their match at court two by an 8-5 margin,
and the freshman duo of Trey Meyer and Felix Sun showed their
rookie prowess at court three with an 8-4 victory.
The dominance continued in singles play. Lebedoff, Sun,
Petrie, Kevin Shallcross, and Zach Weiss took care of their
opponents in two sets. Sun was particularly impressive at
court two, shutting down his Tufts counterpart, 6-0, 6-0.
Jeremy Weinberger struggled in the second set of his match, but
closed out in the super tiebreaker to get the singles sweep for
Williams.
#12 Williams will host archrival #8 Amherst tomorrow at 1:00
p.m.
“The match against Amherst is always the most exciting of
the year,” said Greenberg. “If we bring the same energy
and focus that we did today we will be in good shape.”
