WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – Twelfth-ranked
Williams men's tennis (4-4, 1-1) could not pull off an upset
over eighth-ranked Amherst College, and fell to their archrival in
a 7-2 result. The Ephs freshman provided the lone wins for
the home squad, with Felix Sun and Trey Meyer winning at three
doubles and Bryan Chow winning at court five in singles play.
“The freshman responded to the pressure unbelievably
well,” said Williams head coach Dan Greenberg.
“The seniors may not have won, but really competed and led
the way.”
Williams' number one and two doubles pairs struggled to
win points against their Amherst competition. Nick Lebedoff
and Dicken Chaplin suffered an 8-2 loss at court one, while Bryan
Chow and Will Petrie went down 8-1 at court two. Meyer and
Sun won their match, 8-5.
“In doubles, we can't afford to get off to a slow
start because it can unravel quickly,” said Greenberg.
“In singles, there were moments when the tide could
have changed and we need to be a little more focused and gritty at
those points.”
Doubles play seemed to set the tone, and Williams could not
mount a comeback. Lebedoff started off his match positively
with a close-knit first set victory, but his opponent would not go
away without a fight and delivered 6-4, 6-3 final sets for the
singles win. Weinberger, the other senior co-captain, also
fell in a three set match at court three.
Freshman Felix Sun lost his first singles match against a
Division III opponent at court two, falling 6-7(5), 2-6.
Sophomore Petrie and Zach Weiss went down in straight sets at
courts four and six, while Chow provided the lone win in the
singles ladder. He defeated the Lord Jeff Gross, 7-5, 6-2.
The Ephs look to rebound when they host Wesleyan on Tuesday at
4:15 p.m.
