Ephs rebound with dominant 9-0 win over Wesleyan

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – Williams men's tennis (5-4, 2-1 NESCAC) rebounded from their most recent loss to archrival Amherst with a swift victory over their other Little Three competition, Wesleyan (9-8, 1-6).   Four Ephs singles players closed out their matches with 6-0 second sets, making quick business of the Cardinals in a domineering 9-0 sweep.

“I was proud of how the team rebounded from Sunday's tough match with Amherst,” said Williams head coach Dan Greenberg. “The team also learned a lot from Sunday and made the adjustments in today's match.”

After struggling in doubles play in recent matches, Greenberg chose to shift the lineup a bit.  Sophomore Kevin Shallcross, a constant fixture in the Ephs singles lineup since his freshman year, made just his third appearance of the season at number one doubles.  His first two matches at number one doubles were played with Nick Lebedoff over spring break.  Today Shallcross joined Dicken Chaplin at court one and the two were victorious, 8-2.

Lebedoff moved down a spot to court two, and reunited with his doubles partner from last year, Will Petrie.  Petrie and Lebedoff gave up just one game in an 8-1 win.  Greenberg kept the freshman pair together at court three.  Felix Sun and Trey Meyer notched the only doubles victory against Amherst, and were equally successful in today's match in an 8-3 win.

“We switched some of the doubles teams to maximize different strengths, and that worked well,” said Greenberg.

Dominance continued in singles play.  At courts two through six, each Eph player gave up only two games in five straight set victories.  Felix Sun was relentless at court two, sending his opponent home quickly by winning twelve straight games.   Nick Lebedoff finished the final match of the afternoon, still delivering a solid straight set win at court one, 6-4, 6-3.

The Ephs travel to Maine this weekend to play in two more conference matches.  Williams will begin play at Bowdoin on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
