BRUNSWICK, ME. – After struggling early
in the spring season against ranked competition, Williams
men's tennis (6-4, 3-1 NESCAC) proved this afternoon that
they can contend with the top teams in Division III tennis.
The Ephs picked up their first win against a top-25 ranked team in
a road match at Bowdoin College (10-6, 4-4), 7-2.
“Bowdoin is a very tough team so to win two out of three
doubles and five out of six singles is a strong showing,”
said Williams head tennis coach Dan Greenberg.
Despite the intense fan support for the Polar Bears up in Maine,
Greenberg remarked, ”We responded well to the atmosphere and
stayed focused and were resilient.”
Today marked the first match where Greenberg's new doubles
combinations would really be tested. The results proved the
new pairs are working well, as both Nick Lebedoff and Will Petrie,
and Felix Sun and Trey Meyer, picked up doubles victories at courts
two and three, respectively. Dicken Chaplin and Bryan Chow
lost, 8-1, at the hands of a very experienced duo in Jamie Neely
and Stephen Sullivan.
Williams carried the momentum from doubles play into the singles
lineup. Lebedoff struggled in his opening set at 2-6 but
eventually found his rhythm at court one to take the second set,
6-3. The final set came down to the wire, but the Eph senior
captain came out on top in the tiebreak.
Felix Sun came out on fire at court two, winning the opening six
games to take the first set at love. He closed out the match
easily in the second. Jeremy Weinberger, Bryan Chow, and Zach
Weiss also had straight set wins at courts three, five, and
six. Petrie was the lone Eph to fall against his Polar Bear
counterpart. The Bowdoin senior, Neely, won 6-4,
6-2.
Williams will travel to Colby tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m.
match.
