Men's Tennis

#12 Ephs triumph over #17 Trinity, 6-3

HARTFORD, CT. – Williams men's tennis (8-4, 5-1 NESCAC) put together another solid showing on the courts to add to their recent string of performances, defeating their second top-20 opponent in their last three matches this afternoon at Trinity College (12-5, 4-4).  The Ephs took it to the Bantams in a 6-3 victory and a match that saw five of six singles duels go the distance.

Williams' freshman duo, Trey Meyer and Felix Sun, continued their success at court three.  The pair won their seventh straight doubles match, 8-3. Dicken Chaplin and Bryan Chow fell at court one, while Nick Lebedoff and Will Petrie pulled out a close victory at court two, winning 8-5.   The 2-1 advantage proved to be very important for the tone of the match, as the singles matches were heavily contested.

"I was extremely proud of how we fought today," said Williams head coach Dan Greenberg. "It wasn't our best tennis, but we weathered a tough Trinity team and made some great comebacks. With Will's [Petrie] injury early in doubles, it was amazing to see him get through that set, and then have our other guys step up in singles."

Three Ephs lost in their opening sets, and came from behind to take their matches in three sets.  The match moved inside due to darkness, but Williams fought through the interruption and Lebedoff, Jeremy Weinberger, and Zach Weiss prevailed despite their first set struggles.  Weinberger had a particularly tough match at court three, playing to a third set tiebreak.  The Williams senior won 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(6).

Sun had the quickest win of the day at court two, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.  Chow lost in another three setter at court four, while Kevin Shallcross lost in a third set super tiebreaker with the match already decided at court six.

Williams will close out their regular season with two home matches against Hamilton and Middlebury.  The Hamilton match is schedule for Saturday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m., while the Ephs will take on the top-ranked team in Division III at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
