Ephs fall to Tufts, 13-9, in NESCAC quarters

Boxscore

MEDFORD, MASS. - Williams men's lacrosse ended today with a 13-9 loss to seventh-ranked Tufts this afternoon in the NESCAC quarterfinals. Williams finishes the season with a 5-10 record. Tufts moved its record to 14-1 and advances to take on eighth-seeded Wesleyan, the defending NESCAC champs, which upset Conn. College in its quarterfinal game this afternoon.

The first quarter of the game saw Jumbo D.J. Hessler assist on three goals and Ryan Molloy score two.  Molloy scored his first goal only 1:07 into the game. Eph sophomore Michael Acierno retied the game with 7:08 to go in period after receiving a pass from senior co-captain Richard Reuter, but Tufts responded with two goals in the next five minutes. Sophomore Tim Goggins scored a goal with 1:19 to play in the period off a pass from senior Bryan Wrapp, sending the Ephs into the second period only down 3-2.

Tufts got going on its home field in the second, scoring five straight goals in the quarter's first 10 minutes before Matt Cranshaw was able to score an unassisted goal for Williams with 4:54 to play in the period. Tufts was able to score again with 1:14 to play in the half, bringing the score to 8-3, but Mike Ryan scored for the Ephs with only 40 seconds to bring the Ephs into the break down 8-4.

Coming out of half time, Williams came roaring back. Reuter scored for Williams only 1:47 into the period; Justin Atkins scored for the Jumbos 3:10 later, but the Ephs then scored four consecutive goals, the fourth coming from Sam Hargrove with 2:48 to play in the quarter, tying the game 9-9.

A come-back victory was not to be, however. Tufts scored again before the end of the third to make the score 10-9, then shut out Williams in the fourth while scoring four goals of their own to walk away with the 13-9 victory.

The Ephs will lose eight seniors to graduation next season, including Reuter, goalie Steven Vrla and co-captain Andrew D'Ambrosio. The Ephs should be able to come back strong next season, however, particularly on the offensive end; the team will return Hargrove and Ryan in the attack, who ended the season as the Ephs' two leading scorers, as both scored 19 goals respectively on the year. Hargrove also led the team in assists with 15 on the year.
