AMHERST, MA. – Third-seeded Williams
men's tennis used an early 3-0 advantage in doubles play to
power past sixth-seeded Bates in the first round of the NESCAC
tournament, 5-0, hosted by Amherst College. Two Ephs
freshman, Zach Weiss and Trey Meyer, solidified the win with two
quick straight set victories at courts five and six in singles
play.
“I am proud of how we stepped up today,” said
Williams head coach Dan Greenberg. “We actually got off
to a bad start in doubles, but did a great job of fighting through
it and eventually taking all three matches.”
Williams swept doubles play in three fairly close
contests. Bryan Chow and Dicken Chaplin won by a break at
court one, 8-6, while Nick Lebedoff and Will Petrie took a tight
match at court two as well, 9-7. After suffering their first
loss in nine matches last weekend, Felix Sun and Trey Meyer
returned to their winning ways, outlasting their opponents at court
three, 8-5.
Meyer gave up only one game in his singles match, defeating Zach
Fenno at court six, 6-1, 6-0. Weiss defeated Robert Crampton,
6-2, 6-1 to clinch a spot in the NESCAC semifinals for the
Ephs. Williams was leading in all four of the other singles
matches, but the matches were stopped after the Ephs clinched the
decisive fifth point.
“In singles, we used that momentum to take all six first
sets,” continued Greenberg. “We are excited for
another chance at Amherst.”
Williams will take on second-seeded Amherst tomorrow at 1:00
p.m. Amherst received a first-round bye as one of the top two
seeds in the tournament. The Ephs and the Lord Jeffs faced
off earlier in the season on April 18 with Amherst taking the match
by a 7-2 margin.
