Williamstown, MA- Chessie Jackson led Williams to a 72-47 victory over Connecticut College Friday night, scoring 29 points with five assists and five rebounds. The Ephs have won four straight since their loss to Amherst.
With the victory Williams improves to 16-1 and Connecticut College falls to 7-9. Williams next game will be on Saturday at 4 p.m. versus Wesleyan in Chandler. Williams has already defeated Wesleyan early this year 70-36.
Coach Pat Manning said, "I think that Chessie had one of her most complete games in her four years playing for me. Not only did she score, but she played great defense at the other end."
Taylor Shea also had a good game for Williams scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Connecticut was led by Tara Gableman, who had 11 points and five rebounds, and Jennifer Shinall who had 10 points and three boards.
The game started off with the Ephs and the Camels trading off baskets. Tara Gabelman hit two layups to start the game and the score was knotted at 7-7 with 17:50 left in the half.
Williams took control of the game with a 14-0 run, which made the score 21-7 with 13:10 remaining. The run was capped by Jennie Harding rewarding Danny Rainer, just of the bench, for running the floor and assisting her on her layup.
In the early going the Ephs were led by Chessie Jackson and Taylor Shea who combined for 16 of the first 21 points. Jackson ended the half with 15 points and Shea had eight.
Jackson not only scored but had an assist to Jennie Harding on her way to the basket to make the score 37-13 with 5:22 left. To end the half Claire Baecher stole the ball and took it herself getting fouled, but still converted the layup. She could not finish the three point play however and missed the foul shot. The Ephs entered the half with a comfortable 44-19 lead.
Coach Manning said, "Happy with the first half and the intense defense and the great execution we played with, but in the second half we lost some of that intensity and sharpness. Our goal tomorrow is to play the full 40 minutes"
Jackson remained hot to start the second half scoring the first eight points, hitting two threes. This expanded Williams lead further to 54-22 and forced Connecticut to call an early timeout with 16:20 remaining in the game.
Yet Connecticut kept playing hard and Tara Gableman made an add one to energize the Camel's bench, yet she missed the subsequent foul shot making the score 56-30 with 12:00 left.
Gableman fouled out with 4:30 left in the game and the score 60-39.
Williams won the rebounding battle 44-35 and caused 24 turnovers compared to their 17. This allowed them to take 12 more shots. Williams shot 43.5% (27-62) and Connecticut shot 32% (16-50) for the game.
