Ephs draw Hamilton 0-0

Box Score

CLINTON, NY -- The Williams women's soccer team drew the Hamilton Continentals (6-1-1, 4-1-1 NESCAC) 0-0 today.  With the tie, the Ephs move to 5-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the league.

The Continentals controlled play early.  In the 10th minute, Halle Becker had a nice look at the net, but her shot flew over the crossbar. Just ten minutes later, Hamilton had another good look from Rebecca Rees, but Laura Wann made a great diving save to punch the ball out of the net and keep the game scoreless.  Hamilton continued to control the play – outshooting the Ephs by a tally of 9-4 in the opening frame.

The Ephs fought hard in the second half.  Despite dangerous looks from the Continentals, the Ephs were able to keep the game scoreless behind strong play from keeper Hannah Van Wetter.

Williams controlled the final few minutes of regulation as both Hayley Cook and Chelsea Davies looked like they might be heroes for the Ephs in the final five minutes.  Continental goalie Liza Gergenti, however, was able to stop both shots to send the game into overtime.

The Ephs saw the first shot of overtime just over 30 seconds in when Hana Tomozawa rocketed the ball towards the net. Her attempt went high.  Van Wetter made a huge save for the Ephs with just over a minute left in the first overtime to keep the game scoreless.  Neither team was able to convert in the second overtime.

Hamilton outshot the Ephs by a tally of 21-14 today.  Wann had two saves for the Ephs while Van Wetter had three.  Gergenti recorded five for the Continentals.

Said Coach Michelyne Pinard after the game, "We didn't compete at our highest level today, and it showed in our inability to consistently win 50/50 balls and convert our final passes and our scoring chances. Our backs and goalkeepers did a great job taking care of the pressure [Hamilton] put on us, and we certainly have learned from today and look forward to getting better as a result of the disappointing tie."

Pinard added, "We have a huge weekend coming up, so our plan is to learn, grow and get better with the bulk of our NESCAC schedule ahead of us."

The Ephs return to the field Saturday to take on rival Amherst.  The game will be played away at 12 PM.

Said Pinard, "We're very much looking forward to the game on Saturday."
