WILLIAMSTOWN, MA–– Williams lost to NESCAC rival Wesleyan 9-4 today in their season opener. Wesleyan's scoring was led by Graham MacNab, Teddy Citrin, and Joe Porcell, each netting two goals.i. Williams' offensive effort was led by seniors Michael Acierno, Sam Hargrove, and Mike Ryan, each of whom registered a goal. hargrove also added an assist on the day.
Wesleyan pulled ahead early in the first two quarters of play, ending the first half with a 5-0 lead. Wesleyan held a 16-7 advantage in shots in the first half.
The Ephs started to rally in the third quarter, starting with a goal from senior Mike Ryan on a man up possession. Ryan was assisted by his classmate, Sam Hargrove. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the third quarter, with Williams ending the quarter down 7-3.
The score stayed at 7-3 until 9:10 left to play in the fourth quarter, when Cardinals Max Landow and David Murphy scored two goals to bring the score to 9-3.
Williams freshman Andy Grabowski had the final goal of the game, making the final score 9-4.
Wesleyan's Aidan Daniel netted a game high three points on the day with a goal and two assists.
Wesleyan's Grant Covington made 10 saves and allowed three goals in 54:23 and Mark Simmons allowed one goal and stopped five shots over the final 5:37.
For the Ephs John Wawrose stopped 9 shots and allowed 9 goals playing all 60 minutes in goal.
Next up for the Ephs is a road contest at Trinity on March 17. Play begins at 1pm.
