Williams suffers first loss of the season to Trinity Bantams

Box Score

HARTFORD, CT -- The Ephs (12-1) suffered their first loss of the season this evening in a matchup with conference foe Trinity College (7-5). With the 65-49 loss, Williams fell one game short of tying the record for most consecutive wins in a season, a record set in the Ephs' 1996-97 season.

It took over two minutes for either team to get on the board, but once the Bantams went up thanks to a jump shot by Hannah Brickley, they were hard to stop. Trinity would go on a 14-0 run with eight points from Brickley. The Ephs' Lauren McCall disrupted that run with a three pointer at the 10:20 mark to score Williams' first points. Trinity would maintain their double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, although Williams would capitalize on free throws to try and regain a foothold. Going 6-6 from the line, Williams was able to keep Trinity in their sights. With five points from McCall and four from Kellie MacDonald, Williams finished the half at 17 points to Trinity's 28.

The second half was a different game, with Eph Ellen Cook coming in clutch to score 14 points in the half. Williams would challenge Trinity's momentum, coming within less than ten points of the Bantams for the first time since the 13:06 mark. With two made free throws by Devon Caveney, Williams brought the score to 35-26 in Trinity's favor. Those free throws would play a part in a 9-0 run by Wiliams that finally brought the score to 35-32 in Trinity's favor at the 15:49 mark.

Trinity pushed back, making two layups to bring the score to 39-32. A jump shot by McCall helped stymy the Bantams, but they would regain their ten point lead at the 10:39 mark with a jumpshot by Taylor Murtagh. With consistent shooting from the line by Cook, Williams came back within six points of Trinity. However, this would be the closest Williams came to tying things up against their NESCAC competition. Putting Trinity's free throw shooting to the test, Williams tried to foul to regain possession. The home team sank 11 of those free throws however in those last seven minutes, bringing the final score to 65-49 in Trinity's favor.

Williams next takes on rival Amherst on the road tomorrow at 2 P.M.
