WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Another exciting day at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships came to a close today, seeing the elimination of the number one seed in doubles and the number two in singles. There were exciting matches across the board, making for what is sure to be a close competition tomorrow.
In singles play, only seeded players remain – but the top two seeds have been eliminated in previous rounds. Kohrs (MIT), ranked second, was knocked off by ninth-ranked Maria Pylypiv of Williams, 6-2, 6-1. Pylypiv continued to dominate, earning her spot in the semi-finals with a win over Ghosh (AMH) 6-1, 6-1. Pylypiv will square off against her own teammate, Shin (ranked third overall). The other semifinal will feature Eph standout Juli Raventos against ninth-seeded Aandrita Deb (TUF). Raventos came into the tournament as the seventh seed. On her way to the semis she won a hard-fought match against Yagmur Akgul (BAB) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
There was no shortage of excitement on the doubles side either. The unranked Williams pair of Stone/Gancayco took down the top-seeded team from MIT of Kohrs/Tam 8-3. The Williams team squared off against their teammates Curran/Pylypiv who earned their spot with an 8-3 victory over Freeman/Akgul (fourth seed from Babson). The veterans, Curran/Pylypiv took home the W, however, moving on to the finals with an 8-2 victory. The other semifinal will be played tomorrow at 9am, and is another NESCAC matchup between Bowdoin and Amherst. Fifth seed, Ghosh/Ip (AMH) won their match against rival Cancio/Raventos (WILL) 8-5. The Bowdoin pairing of Chow/Trinka, seeded second in the tournament, defeated Klass-Warch/Dubinsky (WES) 8-6.
Tomorrow's action kicks off at 9am with the singles semifinals and the doubles semifinals match between Chow/Trinka and Ghosh/Ip. Not before 11am the singles final and doubles final will be played, if possible.
