Williams Loses 11-8 to Bates

Lewiston, Maine - Williams(3-3 /NESCAC 2-2) loses to Bates (7-1 /NESCAC 3-1) despite a fourth quarter run.

Both teams started slow. The first goal of the game came after 14 minutes of play for Williams in the last minute of the first quarter on a fast break by Thomas Fowler, assisted by Peter Crane.

In the second quarter Williams kept the fire going early with a goal from Michael Fahey to increase their lead to two goals. Bates then went on a two-goal run to get some wind behind their sales. Fowler scored another for Williams to stop the Bates run, but then Bates went on another two-goal run to end the half ahead 4-3

In the third quarter Williams continued to struggle to score. The Ephs had quite a few dangerous possessions in the quarter but were only able to find the net twice. Meanwhile, bates was hot in the quarter, they scored five goals to go ahead 9-5.

In the fourth quarter Williams started to fight back, with two early goals from Riley Hoffman and Khary Dennis. Bates was quick to respond when Andrew Melvin drove from behind the net to score. On a Williams man-up play Conor Roddy scored to bring the lead down to two goals. With 4 minutes left Williams was determined to get the ball and continue their fourth quarter come back. They left the net empty to free up an extra defender to pressure the ball and it paid off as the ephs forced turnover and got the ball. Williams worked hard to put the ball in the net but a save for Bates by Joe Faria gave them possession back and then Bates scored as Williams pulled their goalie to try to take possession again to pull ahead to a three goal lead and win 11-8.

The Ephs play in the fourth quarter was impressive. Williams' coach George McCormack said, "I was impressed with the run we were able to make in the fourth quarter, we were executing in transition and we were really playing well."

Bates played well too today. McCrmack said, "They played a good game. Their team defense was really great and their goalie made some big saves."

Michael Fahey and Thomas Fowler, who each had two goals, led Williams.

Kyle Weber and Clarke Jones, who each had two goals, led Bates.

Williams' goalie Miles McCarthy played 60:00 and allowed eleven goals while saving sixteen shots.

Bates' Goalie Joe Faria played 60:00 and allowed eight goals while saving eleven shots.

The next game for the Ephs is Wednesday, March 30, when they face off against Colorado College at 3:00 P.M. at home.
