Hanover, NH – After resuming classes a few days prior, the Williams men's track and field team traveled to Hanover to compete at the Dartmouth Indoor Classic. Eph head coach Barron's squad used the non-scoring meet as a good opportunity to compete hard and work together as a unit.
Connor Harris '18 got things going early in the long jump. His first jump of 6.78m held on to finish as the third best mark of the day, and is his new indoor personal best. Fellow jumpers Christian Holway '19 and Amyhr Barber '20 finished in new indoor personal bests of 6.50m and 6.42m, respectively.
The throwers got a lot of momentum going early as well. They were led by Magnus Herweyer '20 and Chris Lyons '17, who both advanced to the finals in the shot put. Herweyer and Lyons rode the excitement and the hype their teammates provided to new indoor personal bests. Herweyer finished 4th overall with a 15.64m throw on his penultimate attempt, and Lyons finished with a 14.74m best throw. Their performance was especially impressive given the tough Division I competition they were up against.
Sam Wischnewsky and Will McGovern kicked off the running events with a solid effort in the 5000m. The freshman pair finished in season-best times of 15:27.85 and 15:28.68. The two were within a second of each other through each lap and ran an entertaining, tight finish. Cowen ended up finishing in 4:23.25, and Kirgis was right there with him at 4:23.45.
First-year Tristan Colaizzi ran a solid 800m race in the first heat. He ran a smooth first 400m and was in a good spot going into the last two laps. Colaizzi was able to hold on and finish a strong last 100m to take 5th overall in 1:56.81.
Tobias Muellers '18 had a great day in the pole vault. He came in at 3.75m and went through to a personal best 4.20m without a miss. Pierceson Brown '18 was right there with Muellers at 4.20m, marking a new season best.
The Ephs had another strong group result in the 1000m. Kevin LaFleche '20 and Nick Gannon '20 were a good duo in the first heat of the event, and ran a gritty race to finish 3rd and 4th respectively in 2:32.29 and 2:32.69. Senior David Folsom ran in the same heat and worked his way through the field to finish in 2:34.71 (8th overall) in a tight finish. In a separate heat, senior Luke Hinz took the lead after 300m and never looked back to win his heat and finish with the 6th fastest time of the day in 2:34.33.
After last competing in May 2015, Ian Outhwaite '17 made his return to track and field in the high jump. The junior jumper was flawless from the opening 1.74m mark through 1.89m, where he ended up finishing out. His teammates and coaching staff are all very glad to see him competing again.
Peter Hale '17 continued his streak of stellar performances, running the 2nd fastest time 3000m in Division III so far this season. He won the race in 8:18.62. Not far behind was the junior duo of Liam Simpson and Griffin Colaizzi. Simpson finished 2nd behind Hale in a personal best 8:24.29, and Colaizzi was not far behind in 3rd at 8:26.81. The two are off to spend the semester studying abroad in New Zealand, and were stellar in their send-off race. Austin Anderson '19 rounded out the top finishers, taking 4th overall in 8:36.58.
To conclude the meet, Williams entered three teams in the 4x400m relay. Charged up by the team's loud cheering, all three teams ran competitive races in their heats. The "A" team of Elliot Fong '19, Tobias Muellers '18, Tristan Colaizzi '20, and Steve Yannacone '17 took 2nd in the fast heat, led by Mueller's 49.8 second split. The first-year squad of Dysron Marshall, Eugene Cho, Robert Delfeld, and Nick Gannon made up the "B" team, and they also took 2nd in their heat in edging out the relay team from Bentley (3:31.30 to 3:31.36). Jacob Nadelman '19, Jackson Ennis '20, Luke Hinz '17, and Ben Hearon '20 ran in the final heat and took 2nd in 3:36.98.
When asked about the meet, coach Barron praised his team's work ethic. "In sport, it's incredibly difficult to walk the razor's edge between content and complacent," he explained. "You need to be happy with the work you've done, but [be] driven to get back to work and go after more. I've been impressed with this year's team's ability to balance those two opposing forces. On to the next."
The Ephs will continue to build chemistry and experience together next week at the BU Valentine Meet and the Gordon Kelley Invitational.
