ATLANTA, Ga. - The Williams College track & field teams opened the outdoor season at the start of the school's March vacation, traveling south for the Emory Spring Break Classic on Friday and Saturday in Georgia.
The Ephs competed in a wide range of events, with some individuals recovering after the indoor national championships and others getting back out on the track for the first time in a few weeks, and the team had several excellent performances throughout the competition.
Among the highlights for the women's team included Ellie Fitzgerald and Audrey Cheng finishing first and second at the meet, posting the top marks in NESCAC thus far in the short spring season. Maria Fareti also continued her strong performances carrying over from indoor, putting up a fourth-place finish in the hammer, the top mark in NESCAC, and a 13th place mark in the shot, the third-best NESCAC mark.
Kelsey Tarby's 5.28m mark in the long jump was 5th at Emory and is the best mark so far in NESCAC, and Amelie Jamanka posted a 1.55m mark in the high jump, 4th in the competition and second in NESCAC so far. Eliza Ayres ran a 15.04 in the 100m hurdles, and in the 1500m, Lily Yampolsky, Clara Gahm, and Mirembe Mubanda went 1-2-3 in the event.
Highlights on the men's side included Emil Nelson's 3:53.89 in the 1500m, the #2 mark in NESCAC so far, and the 3000m was where Williams had the bulk of its distance runners, and the Ephs had the top four finishers, with Malcolm Oakes, Avery Allen, Liam O'Connor and Jackson McFerron all finishing sub-9:00. Colin Stone went sub-50 in the 400m and Gavin Engtrakul dipped below 2:00 in his first collegiate 800m.Â
Vincent VanMaaren was another competitor to carry over strong indoor performances into outdoor success, with a 4.90m mark in the pole vault, top in NESCAC and close to his best mark from indoor season. Jordan Davis earned 5th in the javelin with a 50.57.
