Bowdoin Edges Williams 16-15

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Trailing 12-7 with 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter visiting Bowdoin College (4-2/3-1 NESCAC) out scored host Williams College (4-2/2-2 NESCAC) 9-3 to claim a 16-15 win on Farley-Lamb Field.

The Bowdoin Polar Bears fresh off a double OT win over Middlebury yesterday opened the contest netting three goals in the first three minutes, connecting on their first three shots.

Bowdoin's Brett Kujala scored just 13 seconds into the game with a feed from Sam Carlin. Daniel Buckman upped the Polar Bears' lead to 2-0 at 13:27 with an unassisted goal and that was followed at 12:00 when Kujala scored for the second time off a pass from Drew Hillman.

Williams's offense snapped the 3-goal skein by Bowdoin at 9:21 when Ben Fox scored unassisted. The Ephs' Kevin Stump drew the Ephs within one goal when he scored off a feed from Max Stulakin at 6:51. Just 36 seconds later the Ephs tied the game at 3 when Thomas Fowler converted off a feed from Ben Fox.

Michael Fahey extended the Eph goal streak to four when he circled the goal to Bowdoin goalie Peter Mumford's right side and scored past Mumford's right shoulder. Fahey was not done. He was back to score another unassisted goal from in close at 4:50 and the Ephs were up 5-3.

Bowdoin's Tim Bulens made the score 5-4 Williams when he took a pass from behind the goal from Daniel Buckman and uncorked a laser from 18 yards out. Just eight seconds later Bowdoin's Brett Kujala recorded a hat trick and tied the score at 5 with 2:42 left in the opening quarter. Sam Carlin was credited with an assist on the tying goal.

A wild first quarter ended with the game tied at 5.

The Ephs' Michael Fahey broke the 5-5 tie at 10:34 of the second quarter when he came around the goal to Mumford's right and deposited a shot to the left of Mumford for his third goal of the contest.

The Eph lead went to 7-5 when the Ephs' Max Stulakin stepped around a Polar Bear defender and beat Mumford from 8 yards out unassisted.

Out of a Williams timeout at 5:51 of the second quarter Bowdoin had possession. At 4:38 Bowdoin's Tim Bulens caught a pass from Dan Buckman and scored from 6 yards out to Eph goalie George Peele's left to narrow the Eph lead to 7-6.

Sixty-four seconds later the Ephs answered the Bulens goal with an unassisted tally by John Hincks and the Ephs owned a 2-goal lead again, 8-6.

In a man-up situation at 2:40 Bowdoin got a goal from Brett Kujala, his fourth of the game, as he converted off a pass from Nick Conway and the Polar Bears now trailed 8-7.

Gaining possession at 2:28 Bowdoin called time out. Bowdoin got off a shot out of the timeout, but it hit the pipe and the Ephs' Jake Schuckman collected the ball and the Ephs successfully cleared the ball.

The Eph lead grew to two when Thomas Fowler came from behind the goal out to Mumford's left and score over Mumford's right shoulder to put Williams up 9-7 with 28 seconds left in the quarter.

Gaining possession off the faceoff, Bowdoin called a timeout with 18 seconds remaining. A shot by Bowdoin's Alex Osgood was stopped by Eph goalie George Peele and Peele launched the ball the length of the field as time expired in the quarter.

Williams had 19 shots in the first half to 17 for Bowdoin. Bowdoin collected 20 ground balls in the half and the Ephs picked up 12. The Ephs' George Peele and Bowdoin's Peter Mumford both notched three saves in the first half.

Bowdoin won 10 of 18 face offs and the Polar Bears committed nine turnovers, while the Ephs has seven.

Williams opened the third quarter with a three-goal explosion in the first five minutes. Thomas Fowler netted the first goal in a man-up situation at 13:46 netting an unassisted goal.

Twenty-eight seconds later Fowler was back on the doorstep again to score when the Ephs converted off a caused turnover by Henry Hobbs who raced forward and then hit an open Fowler for the scoring opportunity at 13:18.

Michael Fahey scored the third goal of the quarter for the Ephs with an unassisted effort at 10:07.

With 7:26 left in the quarter the Polar Bears were in a two-man up situation and the Polar Bears notched a goal in eight seconds of the Williams infractions. Nick Conway scored with Brett Kujala assisting.

Kujala brought Bowdoin to within three goals of the Ephs down, 12-9, when he scored at 7:20 off a pass from Drew Hillman.

Shawn Daly scored from 12 yards out on a pass from Tim Bulens as the Polar Bears capitalized on a man-up situation to narrow the Eph lead to 2 at 12-10.

Brett Kujala's sixth goal of the game made the game a one-goal contest when he scored on a pass from Jake Crossman at 3:27.

Benefitting from a Bowdoin penalty the Ephs' Michael Fahey stopped the Bowdoin string of four consecutive goals when he scored unassisted at 2:44.

Bowdoin's Daniel Buckman responded to the Fahey score with an unassisted goal of his own at 2:09. The Eph lead was down to one at 13-12.

Gaining possession off the face off the Ephs called timeout with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter. Out of the timeout Peter Mumford saved a shot by the Ephs' Brendan Hoffman but the Polar Bears had difficulty clearing and were whistled for failing to clear the ball and the Ephs took possession in the final seconds of the quarter. Williams got off two shots, one wide and one saved by Mumford and at the end of three quarters the score was 13-12 Williams.

Bowdoin tied the game at 13:29 of the fourth quarter when Jimmy Young scored from four yards out. Young got behind the Eph defense and received a pass from over the goal from Shawn Daly and beat the rotating Eph defenders with a low shot into the left side of the goal.

Bowdoin took a 14-13 lead when Alex Osgood scored unassisted from 11 yards out to Peele's right. It was Bowdoin's first lead since 6:51 of the first quarter.

At 9:03 after clearing the ball the Ephs called timeout. A shot by the Ephs' Jack Lee was saved by Mumford. Bowdoin's return trip up field found the Ephs' George Peele stopping a shot by James DeSisto, but the Ephs turned the ball over and Bowdoin was back on the attack under eight minutes remaining and leading 14-13.

With 5:20 left the Ephs' Henry Hobbs was called for unnecessary roughness and Bowdoin had a minute man-up opportunity and they capitalized when Tim Bulens netted a goal at 4:59, boosting the Bowdoin lead to two 15-13.

At 3:21 Michael Fahey scored his sixth goal of the contest from 15 yards out off a pass from John Hincks. Bowdoin's lead was now one goal at 15-14.

With 3:07 left the Polar Bears called timeout. The Ephs' Greg Plumb caused a turnover and ran forward where he connected with Michael Fahey who netted his seventh goal of the game at 2:32 and tying the game at 15.

Bowdoin took a 16-15 lead when Matthew Crowell scored what proved to be the game winner over George Peele's left shoulder off a pass from Tim Bulens.

With 52 seconds Mumford saved a shot by the Ephs' Thomas Fowler and the Polar Bears cleared and called timeout with 35 seconds left. Bowdoin successfully held possession and earned a 16-15 victory.

Four of Bowdoin's 16 goals came from 10 man-up opportunities.

"It was a great NESCAC back and forth game," noted Eph head coach George McCormack. "We had too many penalties, which they took advantage of. We'll probably see them again down the road."

Brett Kujala led the Polar Bear attack netting six goals and assisting one. Tim Bulens added three goals and two assists, while Daniel Buckman added two goals and two assists. The Ephs were led by Michael Fahey who tallied a game high seven goals and Thomas Fowler who scored four goals.

On the day the Polar Bears' Peter Mumford had 9 saves and the Ephs' George Peele recorded 6 saves.

Williams had 24 shots on goal, while the Polar Bears had 22.

Bowdoin turned the ball over 16 times, while Williams committed 12 turnovers.

Bowdoin collected 40 ground balls to 27 for Williams.

The Ephs will next play at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. on March 30 in a game slated to started at 3:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
