Box Score Medford, Mass – The Williams College Ephs (5-4/2-3 NESCAC) were defeated by the Tufts Jumbos (10-0/5-0 NESCAC) 13-22 in today's matchup on Bello field within the campus of Tufts University.
Winning the first face-off of the game, Tufts took control of the game by netting the first two goals by John Cordrey and Frank Hattler. Williams soon answered back with a goal by freshman Kevin Stump assisted by Michael Fahey. The Jumbos quickly bounced back and scored four goals in the remaining eight minuets, making the score 6-1 by the end of the first quarter.
The Ephs hit the ground running in the second quarter winning the face-off and making the first goal of the quarter by Ben Fox. The Jumbos let this momentum be short lived, and three straight goals were scored for Tufts by Zach Richman, Ben Connelly and Michael Mattson. With great effort from the freshmen, Rock Stewart created a turn over which produced a goal by Riley Hoffman assisted by Kevin Stump. Tufts put up two more goals in the end of the first half of the game, putting the Jumbos up 11-3 at the half.
Tufts came out with a bang after halftime, winning the first face off and netting the first goal by Danny Murphy, giving the Jumbos their third straight goal. One minute later, Danny Murphy scored his second goal of the game, giving the Jumbos a ten goal lead.
With a face-off win by Angus O'Rourke, a Williams goal was made possible by Brendan Hoffman with twelve minuets remaining in the third quarter. With an unlucky penalty placed on the Jumbos, the Ephs were a afforded a great opportunity with a man-up situation. Williams scores with an unassisted goal by Michael Fahey, making the score with Tufts up 13-5. Goals then were quickly exchanged by Williams and Tufts to keep the Ephs down by eight. The Jumbos ended the 3rd quarter in a strong fashion, making another three goal streak giving them a great advantage going into the final quarter.
With 13:25 in the final quarter, Michael Fahey was able to give the Ephs a spark by sliding one in the back of the Jumbos' goal, making the Ephs down 8-18. This was trumped by two goals for the Jumbos by Matt Treiber and Nico Pollack. A slashing penalty by the Jumbos created another man-up opportunity which translated into a goal by James McFarland assisted by Kevin Stump. Under a minute, both teams scored again in this final quarter to give a score of Tufts 21 and Williams 10.
With 4:05 left in the game, James McFarland scored his second goal of the game, making the Ephs within a ten point deficit. Soon Williams began a short lived comeback by goals from Michael Fahey and Maxwell Stukalin. With 21 seconds in the game, the Jumbos had the last call in the match with a goal unassisted by William Pasik, giving the Jumbos a 22-13 victory.
Danny Murphy led the Jumbos with a whopping 6 goals and two assists. The Ephs were led by Michael Fahey who scored 4 goals and one assist. Kevin Stump also had two goals and two assists.
Eph goalie Goerge Peele played the entire game and made 14 saves. The Jumbos saw three goalies this game. Ben Shmerler saw the majority of the game with 7 saves, while Robert Treiber also had 7 and Jon Conley had 2.
"I liked our effort and attitude during the game, '' noted Eph head coach George McCormack. "We need to clean up our execution and play four strong quarters of focused lacrosse going into this weekend".
The Ephs return to action this Saturday at Wesleyan for another NESCAC matchup at 1pm. The Tufts Jumbos will next play on Saturday also when they host Hamilton at 1pm.
