Williamstown, MA – Day two of the All New Englands Track & Field Championships was a hectic one, as the meet was moved along rather quickly to try and beat the impending storm. The meet ended up only seeing a little rain, and the Ephs did a great job adjusting to the schedule. At the end of it all, Williams finished 6th overall with 43 points. The University of Rhode Island won the meet with 163 points.

Magnus Herweyer '20 was first up for the Ephs; in his first of two events, he threw the discus. The freshman standout was one of only two first-years in the field, and showed that he absolutely deserved to be there. His second attempt of the day rocketed him up 6 spots in the standings; he finished with a 44.14m mark. Later in the day, Herweyer doubled back to take over in his speciality: the shot put. He was once again only one of two first-years in the field, but displayed the calm and collected nature of a seasoned veteran. Herweyer's first five attempts included two fouls and three throws that just got him into the final; nevertheless, he shook off the beginning of the event and on his final throw he threw an absolute beauty for 16.25m to shock the standings and secure 1st place. He was one of only three male freshmen this year to earn the individual title "All New Englands Champion."

In the triple jump, Christian Holway '19 snuck into scoring position on his final "prelim" jump of the day; his mark of 13.94m got him into the finals (3 more attempts) and was good enough to hold on to 8th place and the point that comes with it.

Not long after, two of the team's seniors competed in their final individual event at home. First, Steve Yannacone '17 cracked the 1:53 barrier for the first time this season in the 800m. He ran from the back–as he often does–and crept his way up the field before storming away and holding on to win his heat in 1:52.83. Later in the high jump, Ian Outhwaite '17 brought home a 4th place finish by clearing 1.96m on his first very first attempt.

The Ephs wrapped up the meet in the 4x800. Peter Kirgis '20 went first; he tucked in back early and rode a powerful last 200m to move the Ephs into 3rd. Next, Alex Cowen '18 stayed relaxed in 3rd for 1st lap before making a move for 2nd on the back stretch of the 2nd lap. He jostled a little with competitor but kept his composure and stayed on focused on holding 2nd. He handed off to Tristan Colaizzi '20, who tucked into 3rd for the first lap and then surged into 1st before giving the baton to David Folsom '17. Folsom was passed early in the leg, but going into last lap he surged back. He reclaimed the lead with 250m to go, and gritted and grinded his way through a tough finishing stretch to finish 2nd overall. The relay team's time of 7:34.96 is a school record, and was a great way to cap off the meet.

With All New Englands behind them, the Ephs turn their attention to the final weekend of competition before going to NCAAs. They will have the option of competing at the MIT Last Chance Meet.
