Riley, Edwards Kickoff DIII New Englands for Men's Track and Field

Williamstown, MA – On the first day of the Division III New England Track & Field Championship, the Williams College men's track and field team showcased two of its best all-around athletes in the decathlon. The decathlon is comprised of ten events across different event disciplines, the first five of which were today. At the end of the first day, Tom Riley '18 leads all athletes with 3395 points. Fellow Eph Kyrien Edwards '18 is in 10th with 2631 points.

The first event contested was the 100m dash. Riley ran in the first heat and cruised to an event-leading time of 11.07 seconds (845 points), a new personal best. Edwards ran in a hotly contested second heat, and took the win in also running a personal best of 11.93 seconds (6th overall, 665 points).

Next up was the long jump. In between chats with his teammates and the rest of the field, Riley increased his lead in the decathlon and secured another personal best. He brought his best at his final jump, leaping for 6.52m (702 points). Edwards and Riley built off each others' energy well, as Edwards also saved his best for last and jumped for 5.64m (8th overall, 510 points).

Riley continued his hot streak and threw an outdoor personal best in the shot put. Riley's mark of 11.16m earned him 556 points and 2nd in the event. Edwards built upon each throw and also walked away with a new personal best of 9.49m (455 points, 9th overall).

Next up was the high jump. Edwards went in to jump first for the Ephs and was 5 for his first 6 attempts, and ended up tying his season best mark of 1.59m (10th overall). Riley went for a few more heights and finished out at 1.68m (7th overall).

To conclude the day, Riley sped out of the start in the 400m and never looked back to handily win the event in a huge personal best 51.11 seconds (764 points). Edwards followed suit and set a personal best of his own to take 6th overall (56.39 seconds, 544 points).

Competition will resume tomorrow, Friday 5/5, at noon in the second half of the decathlon.
