Williamstown, MA – The final day of the Division III New Englands Track and Field Championship featured only a few scattered showers, a huge improvement over the previous day. Gusts of upto 44mph made the day tough still but the athletes remained composed and gave it their all. The Ephs finished 4th overall with 76.50 points. MIT finished at the top of the standings with 123 points.
The throwers were the first to get some momentum going for the Ephs. They were led by freshman standout Magnus Herweyer, who improved upon each of his first two throws to start off. He shook off all the talk of nasty winds by the pit to throw for 4th overall with a 15.28m. Senior Chris Lyons and junior Liam Pembroke provided much appreciated energy in the event while also throwing for 13.53m and 13.41m, respectively.
Freshman Kenny Marshall represented the Ephs in the fast heat of the 3000m steeplechase. Marshall drafted off the competition well and was only a couple seconds off his personal best set at NESCACs, finishing the race in 9:40.68 (9th overall).
The Ephs stacked the 1500m; in the first heat, four Ephs ran against the field. Sophomore Austin Anderson ran tactically behind second for most of the race before surging by in the final 200m to capture 2nd in the heat (3:57.35, PR). Freshman Tristan Colaizzi ran a hard fought race with Anderson for most of it, coming through the line in 4:00.89. Rounding out the efforts in the first heat were freshman Benjamin Hearon (4:13.16) and sophomore Lucas Estrada (4:17.33). Next, senior captain David Folsom ran a gutsy race from the front and took 2nd overall on the day in a time of 3:52.10. Freshman Peter Kirgis was also in the second heat and used the fast field to propel himself to a new personal best 3:55.96.
The Ephs snagged another 10 points behind the power of junior Tobias Muellers. Muellers was quick out of the blocks in the 400m and ran his turns extremely well to will himself to a new personal best 48.33 seconds and a win in front of the cheering home crowd.
Though the women's pole vault was moved inside due to the wind, the men were afforded no such favor; still, junior Pierceson Brown battled hard and shook off a few rough jumps to snag a point with his 4.32m finish.
The Ephs contested each of the three heats of the 800m. In the first, freshman Nick Gannon pushed hard and came away with a 1:58.93 mark. In the second, freshman Kevin LaFleche and junior Alex Cowen gave valiant efforts against a scrappy field; LaFleche finished in a clump of runners with a time of 1:55.35 and Cowen was not far behind in 1:57.10. Finally, in the third heat Steve Yannacone ran off the speed of the field en route to a season best 1:53.84.
As the gusts continued to pick up, the javelin throwers began their day. Junior Ian Mook represented the Ephs and capitalized on his second attempt, throwing for 52.58m. Not long after, Mook doubled back to run in the 400m hurdles and set a season best time of 56.29 seconds.
Herweyer also returned to the field after his stellar morning in the shot put to throw the discus. Once again, his last throw was his best and he snagged 3 points with his 6th place finish of 43.58m.
It was a tough day to be a high jumper, but Ian's Outhwaite and Kagame still came out and competed hard. Outhwaite cleared 1.91m and Kagame cleared 1.86m.
The 5000m was the Peter Hale show. Hale spent the first few laps drafting off the leader before seizing the lead and never looking back en route to a 14:16.22 finish and personal best. That time is not only a stadium and meet record, but is also only 1.05 seconds off the outdoor school record. In less of the spotlight but with just as much conviction, senior Noah Williams pushed himself to his own outdoor personal best time of 15:00.58 (4th overall) in running away from a cluster of competitors. Sophomore Zeke Cohen also ran for a personal best today, crossing the line in 15:10.93. Junior Ben Decker rounded out the team's efforts with a gutsy 15:21.91 effort.
The meet concluded with the 4x800 and 4x400m relays. Up first, the team of Peter Kirgis, Austin Anderson, Tristan Colaizzi, and David Folsom ran a close one against WPI and finished 3rd overall in 7:43.87. Not long after, the relay team of Elliott Fong, Kevin LaFleche, Steve Yannacone, and Tobias Muellers ran another close relay finish. They brought home a 5th place finish in 3:19.37.
With Division III New Englands behind them, the Ephs turn their attention toward competing at home again next weekend, this time at All New Englands.
