WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Ephs began their season with a 9-0 home victory over Springfield College. Sweeping both doubles and singles play, Williams begins the fall with the record 1-0. This was the first of their two team matches scheduled for the abbreviated fall season.
"A great opening match for us," stated head coach Dan Greenberg. "It is a young team, but they competed well and built upon their leads."
Partners Austin Barr '21 and Calvin Chung '21 earned their first collegiate victory with a 8-2 win over their opponents. Their success was mirrored by Arturo Kam '21 and Benjamin Lebowitz '20 who notched an 8-0 victory of their own. To finish the doubles sweep, Alex Taylor '20 and Brian Grodecki '18 shutout their opponents 8-0.
The doubles success was mirrored by a 6-0 sweep in singles play. Chung, Barr, and Kam kept the ball rolling with consecutive 6-0, 6-0 sweeps. Taylor and Sachin Raghavan '18 dispatched their opponents with equally strong 6-2, 6-1 performances. To finish the match off and complete the sweep, Grodecki won a hard fought battle against Springfield senior Alex Romaine with a score of 6-2, 7-6.
After a convincing performance to start the season, Greenberg concluded "I am looking forward to practice tomorrow, and the upcoming match against Vassar this Friday."
Much like Williams, Springfield College began their 2017 fall season today. Their regional record falls to 0-1 for the season thus far, and they will not play anymore team matches this fall. Members of the Wiliams and Springfield teams could meet up again at the ITA Regional Tournament at MIddlebury College which begins on Friday September 29th and runs through Sunday October 1st.
Williams now turns its focus to the fast approaching second team match of the season. The Ephs will play again at home on Friday September, 22nd against Vassar College. Set to begin at 4:00 pm, the team looks to maintain their early success.
