ROME, N.Y. –
Williams Men's Crew descended upon the Erie Canal for a beautiful afternoon of racing against the Hamilton College Continentals. Conditions in Rome, New York were fair with a bit of a persistent headwind. The Ephs had a great showing, with all three crews bringing home a victory in their respective events.

Eph head coach Marc Mandel reflected on the day saying: "Thank you to Hamilton for hosting the races - very cool experience to race on the Erie Canal. With several more days of practice under our belts this past week, I felt each of our boats has made progress, and I'm excited to see what the next week brings in terms of our continued development."

Up first for the day was the 2V race, featuring entries from both Williams and Hamilton. The Williams crew found themselves just barely down through the early stages of the race but were able to find a rhythm and kick it into high gear, ultimately finishing with several lengths of open water over the Hamilton crew. The final times read 6:55.6 for Williams to Hamilton's 7:21.1. Coxswain Katie Friedman felt that "It was some of our best rowing yet this season. We were down a bit off the start but were able to really lock in our rhythm and connection today to consistently walk through them and row a solid piece throughout."

Next was the 1V race, with a great competition between the Ephs and Continentals. The 1V crew was sitting up on the Continentals off of the start and never looked back, finishing with open water in a time of 6:40.1 to Hamilton's 7:07.1. 7-seat Gus Nordmeyer said, "Our boat was really happy with our aggression throughout the race…we saw the race as a stepping stone towards more boat speed when it really matters - at the NESCAC championships."

Rounding out the afternoon was Williams' 3V, who raced a solo 2000m time-trial earlier in the day before lining up against the Hamilton 2V for a shortened 1500m race. Racing a solo time-trial is never a very easy task, yet it provides great opportunity to focus on internal mechanics and row with a technical focus, without distraction from another boat. The Ephs took advantage of this to show great composure and row a solid piece in 7:15.8.

Lining up for a second race within the hour, one would expect a bit of fatigue, but the Williams crew fought it off valiantly. Despite being down by several seats after the first third of the race, the Williams crew eventually walked through Hamilton to finish with open water separating the two boats. Williams finished with a time of 5:20 to the Hamilton 2V's 5:25.9. 3-seat Asher Lasday noted, feeling "Super happy with the speed we found in the 2nd race, it was great to see the work we've been doing this season come together."

The Ephs look forward to the qualification stage at the NESCAC West regatta next week, where they will race familiar rivals Wesleyan, Hamilton, and Trinity on home water at Onita Lake in Pittsfield, Mass. The top two teams from the 1V race will secure their team a place in the 2021 NESCAC Championships.
