Brunswick, ME- Junior
Matt Kandel started off the day with his semifinal match against a worthy Brandeis opponent. Kandel started off strong, jumping out to a 6-0, 4-1 lead, and the match looked to be nearing the end. But the Brandeis player raised his level and found himself up 5-4, 30-0 serving. Kandel managed to find his level again and rattle off three straight games to win 6-0, 7-5. With that win in the semis, he qualifies for the ITA Cup nationals in Rome, Georgia later this month.
In the finals, Kandel faced an in-form Middlebury opponent. After going down 3-0 early, Kandel battled back to 4-4, but a couple no-ad deuce point mistakes cost him the next two games and the first set. In the second, Kandel missed some key opportunities early and fell 6-2. He will return to action in two weeks at nationals. Coach Greenberg said of the weekend, "It was not the greatest ITA regionals that Williams men's tennis has ever had, but there were a few bright spots. All of the men had moments that showed what they are capable of, and hopefully Matt can prove that in Georgia."
