Lewiston, ME — Williams men's tennis secured a 7-2 victory over Bates on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Ephs got off to a lead in doubles and never looked back.
In doubles, first years Jason Shuler and Simon Volkema continued their fine start to the season, winning 8-3 at the 3 spot. Junior Matt Kandel and senior Chase Cohen followed up shortly with a 8-3 win of their own. Senior Karan Amin and sophomore Shawn Berdia fell at the 2 spot 8-6.
The Ephs were dominant during the singles play. Cohen extended the Ephs' lead, winning 6-3, 6–4. Shuler won a decisive first set 7-6, and then cruised along to win the second set 6-2. Volkema clinched the Ephs victory. The first year came up clutch at the end of both sets of the match as he won 7-6, 7-6. Berdia battled well at the 4 spot to force a third set but was defeated 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Kandel and sophomore Andrew Chong were the last Ephs to play. Both came away with straight set victories. The Ephs will face Tufts this afternoon.
