Point Loma, CA – The Williams College Ephs dropped their first back of their annual spring break trip to Point Loma Nazarene University. The Ephs were dominant, winning the doubles point by winning all three of the doubles matches. However, first year
Simon Volkema was the only Eph to come away with a victory in the singles play.
The Ephs started off strong during the doubles play as first year
Nicholas Chen was able to make his debut. Chen played alongside first year
Jason Shuler at the 2 spot. The first year duo were the first to finish, winning their set 6-3. Senior
Chase Cohen and junior
Matt Kandel finished shortly after, taking their set 6-4 and earning the Ephs the crucial doubles point. First year
Simon Volkema and sophomore
Shawn Berdia won 6-4 at the 3 spot.
The Ephs battled well during the singles play but came up just short on multiple courts. After dropping the first set quickly, Kandel came back much stronger in the second set, earning himself a set point in the tiebreaker. Unable to convert, Kandel lost the tiebreaker and the match 6-0, 7-6(6). Berdia found himself in a three-set battle but fell 10-5 in the super tiebreaker.
Coach
Dan Greenberg reflected on the match, stating "It was a strong performance in doubles, but we failed to capitalize in singles. Looking forward to improving on the singles front against Chapman." The Ephs face Chapman University tomorrow morning at 11 AM PDT.
