Orange, CA – Williams men's tennis bounced back from their defeat against Point Loma with a 7-2 victory over Chapman University on Thursday afternoon. The Ephs continued their dominant form in doubles, winning each of the three doubles points. The Ephs won four out of six singles matches. First year
Nicholas Chen earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory in his singles debut.
The Ephs raced out to large leads in the doubles play. At the 1 spot, senior
Chase Cohen and junior
Matt Kandel earned an early break and never looked back. Chen and first year
Jason Shuler followed suit. At the 3 spot, first year
Simon Volkema and sophomore
Shawn Berdia came up clutch in the final games to win 8-5.
During the singles play, sophomore
Andrew Chong earned a hard-fought first set in a tiebreaker and ran away with the second set 6-1. Kandel, Volkema, and Chen were straight set winners as well. The two Eph losses both came in third set super tiebreakers. After winning the first sets, Shuler and Berdia both dropped the second sets and fell short in the super tiebreakers.
The Ephs will now face Pomona-Pitzer this evening under the lights at 5 PM PDT.
