Claremont, CA — On Saturday evening, the Williams College Ephs defeated CMS 8-1 in a top 10 matchup. The Ephs grabbed a 3-0 lead after doubles to set up a dominant performance in singles. At the 1 spot, senior
Chase Cohen and junior
Matt Kandel saved two match points to win the tiebreaker 8-6. The Ephs won 8-5 at the 2 and 3 spots.
It was a solid day in singles for the Ephs. After doubles, Kandel extended the Ephs lead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over CMS sophomore Matt Robinson. Kandel set up first year
Jason Shuler for the clinch as the first year remained cool and composed for a 6-3, 6-2 win at the 3 spot. First years
Simon Volkema and Nic Chen closed out straight set victories within minutes of one another. Cohen extended the Ephs lead to 8-0 with a 7-5, 6-4 win over first year Advik Mareedu. Sophomore
Shawn Berdia forced a third set tiebreaker but was unable to convert the match point at 9-8 and fell 11-9. After the match, Berdia stated, "I was hoping to close out my match at the end there, but I'm happy with how myself and the boys competed. After last year's loss to CMS, I came away thinking that we were slightly outplayed. I am happy that we were able to flip that narrative with a decisive win against the #3 team in the nation."
