Medford, MA -- A select group of athletes traveled to Tufts University this Saturday to compete in the Tufts Last Chance National Qualifier. These Ephs hoped to put out a performance that would earn them a spot at the NCAA Division III Championship in Birmingham, AL next weekend. The top 20 from each event qualify for the NCAA Championship (top 12 for relays). Thus, these athletes started the day right around 20th in their respective events on the national ranking list in and attempted break into the top 20 in their event or solidify their position.
The Distance Medley Relay was the first event the Ephs competed in for the day. Run by
Jinwoo Kang '24 on the 1200m leg,
Bryce Cooper '26 on the 400m,
Zachary Liu-Walter '26 on the 800m leg, and
Nate Lentz '24 on the 1600m leg, the group ran 9:58.51, which unfortunately is not fast enough to qualify.
The next event was the 5000 meter run.
John Lucey '24, Charles Namoit '25, and
Will Spollen '23 all competed. Lucey ran the best of the three, finishing in
14:28.83 (which converts to a 14:19.63 since he ran on a flat track instead of a banked track). This time currently sits at #25 on the national ranking list, so he could sneak in depending on how many athletes above him scratch and choose not to compete at the NCAA Championship.
Jeremy Bertolet '24 was the lone Eph jumper at the meet. He jumped 13.47 meters in the triple jump, earning 3rd place at the meet but not enough to qualify for next weekend.
As results roll in from meets around the country this weekend, we will soon know which Ephs will be making the journey to Alabama next weekend for the NCAA Division III Championship.
