Brunswick, ME – Williams men's tennis clinched a 5-4 victory over Bowdoin this afternoon. The match was all squared at 4 apiece with sophomore
Shawn Berdia as the last Eph standing. In the third set, Berdia jumped out to a 3-0 lead, playing aggressive tennis by closing well at net. The lead was erased, but Berdia remained calm and composed to run away with the match 6-3.
The Ephs gained a crucial lead in doubles. At the 1 spot, senior
Chase Cohen and junior
Matt Kandel gave the Ephs a 1-0 lead after an 8-6 win. Berdia and first year
Jason Shuler were pushed to a tiebreaker and fell 7-3. At the 3 spot, sophomore
Andrew Chong and first year
Simon Volkema saved two match points before winning the tiebreaker 9-7.
In the singles, Shuler extended the Ephs' lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win. Cohen fell at the 1 spot 6-2, 7-5 after a late push to send the match to three sets. Kandel restored the Ephs' two point lead with a well-earned 7-5, 6-3 victory. Chong and Volkema were defeated in straight sets. Berdia dropped his opening set before winning the final two sets 6-4, 6-3.
The Ephs will face Colby tomorrow morning at 10 AM.
