Williamstown, MA — Ephs men's tennis improved to 12-3 on the season with a 9-0 victory over Hamilton this afternoon. Despite the breezy conditions, it was an enjoyable afternoon with numerous parents and alumni in attendance. The Ephs started strong in doubles and continued their impressive form throughout the singles play.
First year duo Jason Shuler and Nicholas Chen gave the Ephs the 1-0 lead after a comprehensive win at the 2 spot. Shuler's dominant serving display was complemented with Chen's clinical return performance. Sophomore Shawn Berdia and junior Matt Kandel earned an 8-6 win at the 1 spot. The new doubles pairing elevated their level towards the end of the match to gain the crucial advantage. Sophomore Andrew Chong and first year Simon Volkema gained a comfortable lead and never looked back to secure the Ephs the 3-0 advantage.
In the singles play, Kandel, Shuler, and Berdia cruised to straight set victories. The trio dropped a total of six games in a showcase of aggressive and disciplined tennis. At the back end of the lineup, Volkema and senior Karan Amin earned comfortable straight set wins. At the 5 spot, Chong brought out his best tennis during the third set super tiebreaker to give the Ephs the 9-0 sweep.
The Ephs will take on Amherst tomorrow at 2 PM in their final NESCAC conference match of the season.
