Saratoga Springs, NY - This weekend, the Ephs traveled to Fish Creek for the yearly Little Three Championships to race conference rival Wesleyan University in a highly anticipated matchup. Each team brought four 8's for the afternoon 2000 meter races, which took place under blustery conditions that resulted in a cross-headwind.
Â
Due to inclement weather and lengthy race delays, the first and second 8's raced in the same flight. Wesleyan 1V got up early and crossed the line first (6:39.13), followed by the Williams 2V (6:43.04), Williams 1V (6:46.87), and Wesleyan 2V (6:48.48).
Â
First eight 6 seat
Owen Maier '25 reflected on the race, saying: "I hope our boat moves forward with our heads up after our best week at practice yet didn't yield the result we were looking for. Wesleyan showed us where we can improve, and we're excited for another week on Onota before our first home race."
Â
Second eight bow seat
Trent Boone '25 had this to say about the day: "It was definitely a bit chaotic with the wind, but we did a good job of staying composed and keeping our heads between the gunwales in order to really find our stride and step away in the second thousand."
Â
Up next were the third and fourth 8's, also racing together because of delays and weather. Williams 3V (6:53.49) finished first, followed by Wesleyan 3V (6:58.36), Williams 4V (7:00.27), and Wesleyan 4V (7:07.16).
Â
Third eight stroke seat
Alden Knox Weaver '27 was pleased with the race, saying: "I'm proud of how our crew did today. I think waiting for such a long time on the water before starting is an underrated challenge from a mindset standpoint that we weathered well. Wesleyan showed a lot of class today and I'm excited to race them again at NERCs."
Â
Fourth eight coxswain
Casey Monteiro '24 was also happy with how her crew performed: "We came out strong off the start and found ourselves hanging onto the Wesleyan third boat for the whole race. We feel so proud to have been so close to the Wesleyan third boat, coming in less than 2 seconds behind them!"
Â
After a full afternoon of racing, Eph head coach
Marc Mandel had this to say: "While our first boat admittedly struggled today, all credit should go to Wesleyan's first eight, who clearly showed why they are the #1 ranked crew in the nation - they rowed with length and aggressiveness in spite of very challenging conditions. It was exciting to see our second, third and fourth eights each race to wins against Wesleyan, a very deep squad. Of note is how much our fourth eight continues to improve since getting on the water just over a month ago."
Â
With another race under their belts, the Ephs will now begin preparation for next weekend's contest at home on Onota Lake against Tufts, Hamilton, and MIT Lightweights.
